Throughout the course of art history the concept of women being displayed in natural settings has been a common theme.  Women and nature have become unified as one.  Portraying women and nature in the way that many artists of the past have creates the idea that women are simply erotic subjects for the viewer to gaze at and brings into question the domination of both women and nature. By selecting works of art which portray women in natural settings and then reinventing them through photography I hope to portray women as a separate identity from nature, as independent, and as powerful.

Presentation of Book

I am going to have my book made rather than make it myself because I want my book to look similar in structure to an art history book.  I would like to display both the original image and then my image side by side if possible.  I am going to try to make my book have somewhere from 10-15 pages.

So before I actually do a photoshoot for my artist book I need to make sure that I have all of my ideas clear for each of the artworks that I chose to reinvent. I think I have decided that for each photo I will have a certain theme. Hopefully when next week comes around I will have had time to take some actual photos for my book.

This is the picture that I want to use for my first photo.

In this one as I mentioned before I am going to move her hand slightly. I think the theme for this one is going to be knowledge. I am thinking about having a book laying on her and maybe some reading glasses as she rests her eyes for a second from reading. I might even have her laying on a stack of books. I'm not sure if I should change the background or not. I want to make sure that I stay clear from making the picture seem school girlish at all.

Here is another picture that I definately want to use.

In this picture I would really like to have the girl putting on a pair of combat boots. I would like to make her seem a little more rugged and beat up as if she has been in battle. I guess the theme for this one would be something such as courage or bravery.

  1. It definitely shows that you're putting a lot of thought and planning into this. It'll be really interesting to see how the actual photos come out, I'm sure they'll be really beautifully crafted.

  3. Hey!
I love your idea about making the women seem strong and empowered! Like you said, I would definitely be careful not to make the first one seem school girlish, but I believe you'll do a great job! I can't wait to see the photos!
